Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage site, served as the second capital of Sri Lanka after the decline of Anuradhapura. The city’s historical significance lies in its role as the political and economic center of the island during the 11th to 13th centuries. Under the rule of King Parakramabahu I, Polonnaruwa became a thriving city with impressive infrastructure, including irrigation systems, palaces, and temples. The city’s well-preserved ruins, such as the Royal Palace, the Gal Vihara rock temple, and the Parakrama Samudra reservoir, reflect its past glory and architectural brilliance.
